My 2016 Rewind

Happy Holidays: Friends, Donuts, and Cakes

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I had an early Christmas celebration with my friends on Monday and despite having class the next morning (one of my friends had her final exam the next day!), we all gathered to make some food, do a Secret Santa, and stay up almost all night. Looking forward to enjoying the rest of college like this.

I came across a really yummy donut at "Jack in the Donuts" at Akasaka and really wanted to show you. It's called Crème Brulee, and just like the real thing, this donut had a nice crunchy sugar coating. The interior was a super chewy dough (like mocha-chewy) filled with custard.
There were a couple more that I wanted to try so I must go back again soon!

Jack in the Donuts

Tokyo Career Forum

Saturday:
There are days when it is just not my day. Today's that day.
I literally spent all morning lying down catching up on Vlogmas videos and then sitting down at the library reading document after document for my thesis...like I could not have been more mute and yet I feel absolutely drained. And I had actually intended to write a few pages for my thesis but I have absolutely no motivation and ended up doing the "easy stuff" and just collected data.

On a brighter note, I finally got a haircut. My reason for liking to have shorter hair in the winter is quite simple: I hate having my hair get static-y after wrapping it around with my scarf. Japan has this wonderful opportunity to be a "Cut Model" and get a haircut for maybe a fourth or a fifth of the original price. Basically, trainees or assistants of the salons practice different styles on you and maybe snap a few before and after photos. Some people prefer to have their hair done by professionals but ho…

800 Degrees Pizza

I don't know what I was thinking but I posted last week completely thinking that it was Sunday (it was actually Saturday). This week was just a week of headaches - I'm constantly thinking about my graduation thesis and reports to write and I am so done. I cannot wait for winter break.
Last weekend I wait dinner with some girls from the gymnastics team that I was part of until I left for France at a restaurant in Shinjuku called 800 Degrees Pizza. This restaurant was kind of like a mix between a fast food restaurant and a fine dining restaurant - no waiters came to take our order so we personally went to the counter to choose our pizza and toppings, kind of like Chipotle. The pizzas were then taken to a stove where they were baked until the crust turned nicely golden brown. We said cheers with some virgin mojitos and the restaurant's orignal lemonade since we were …

Graduation Thesis

I'm going to keep this short today. I've finally finished all of my midterm exams, leaving me with just two reports. I don't think I've studied this hard for exams in my last three years. Finally getting around to being a student, I guess. And I also have my thesis...Ohhhhh my thesis. Students usually have a year and a half to write it but I actually only have one because I had been studying abroad.
I went to eat Soup Curry with a friend at a restaurant located around my campus. Bacon, Veggies, with Cheese. Yum. Besides the academics, my university is known for the good restaurants that surround the campuses. I, unfortunately, have not really taken initiative to try all the good foods. Better to start late than never right?

Indonesian Cuisine

With a majority of my prerequisite courses finished, I'm taking some interesting courses this semester to fulfill some curiosities that have been gnawing at me for the past couple of years, one of them being Indonesian. Though I was born in the land of Nasi Goreng and Sate, I only knew a handful of phrases that wouldn't really get me anywhere. I'm finally taking a beginner's course this semester and my professor kindly invited us, the students, to have lunch at one of her favorite Indonesian restaurants in Tokyo. Around 10 of us ended up gathering at CABE, located just 5 minutes from Meguro Station where we indulged in a delicious lunch set of rice, coconut curry, gado gado salad, along with some others for the reasonable price of 1000 yen (I must go back once again to get the names for each of the items on my plate!).

Job Hunting in Japan

Seriously can time fly any faster? While I'm both happy and relieved that a week of midterms have already finished, leaving me with only one more week, I am struggling to keep up with the pace of time. I have so much to do and so little time. Can someone please invent some time portal-esque creation to increase the day to maybe 36 hours without having to worry about aging? First semester of senior year is already half gone and I am furiously doing anything I can to end up working in the industry that I want to be in. I am also in denial that I actually need to buy a "Shukatsu" suit, aka a f***ing expensive ensemble that the Japanese society quietly forces future graduates to buy as a way of proving assimilation to the social standards so that we can land a job. Everyone around me has already bought one but I've actually been getting interviews without one, and making good impressions (I think I do, at least) - I'm questioning why it is really necessary to "…

Sunday Cafe Day

It's Sunday so I'm at the café near my house again to study. Midterms are starting tomorrow so I'll probably be hibernating in the library for the next two weeks. There are so many students around me right now who I'm assuming are on the same boat.
I feel like I've been really productive lately - I was really into "new experiences" my first three years in college but I'm finally focused more on my studies now and have been living like a hermit. I don't mean just school studies but just studying in general - things that have been interesting me but I had never really gone around to learn about. I've been able to do some interesting jobs thanks to that and I'm really thankful that my efforts are paying off. This week I was able to be a translator at an after party of a particular event that took place at an embassy. I initial…

November

Halloween came and was gone in the blink of an eye this year. I've been around a lot of underclassmen recently and they've been talking about what they were gonna do while my friends and I were stressing over job hunting. I didn't really want to just let the day go by without doing anything, especially since it's senior year, so I went out for dinner and drinks with some friends. I've been starting a cup coaster collection since I visited Germany last winter so I was pretty excited when this particular bar had one.

As I mentioned in my last post, I turned 22. One of my friend's birthdays lies a few days after mine so my friends surprised us during lunch with cake and presents.

There's a café …

22

I almost forgot it was Sunday! Oops. Anyways, this week was a bit hectic but quite an eventful week.
We celebrated a friend's birthday at Oedo Onsen where we just relaxed in hot baths all evening. I could not have been more at peace after hours in the library frying my brains. Honestly, I needed that. We chilled afterwards with some shaved ice for me and ramen and curry for the other girls.

I do some administrative work for the company I currently work for, which is mostly in preparation for international conferences/events that take place in Japan. I sometimes get to participate in these events and this time, it was as an interpreter. I've done interpreting quite a number of times and I feel a little more confident each time I finish that certain event. It's a skill that I would love to improve on so I'm glad I really enjoy doing it!

11.22.63

I can't really say whether this week went by fast or slow for me. The library has been my home and I can't really get my mind to stop from constantly thinking about what I should be doing next. I don't really know how to just "rest" anymore.
I watched a TV series called 11.22.63, which I had actually started on my plane ride from Paris. It's about a man who goes back in time to prevent Kennedy's assassination and I finally got back to finishing this mini-series that I ended up really enjoying.

Oktoberfest

Gosh this week has just not been easy for me - one stressful event after another just keep on piling up and I'm ready to explode. It's kind of hard to imagine that just last weekend I was in Yokohama to enjoy the Oktoberfest with some good friends and beer...guess it all just started after that. Anyways, let's just call this week one big unstable emotional mess.
Spotify came to Japan! (finally!) Well actually it was released I believe a couple weeks ago but I finally got to downloading it last weekend. The soundtracks are a little different to me only because I first downloaded the app when I was in France, where the music and vibes catered to the French audience. I'm definitely hearing a lot more Japanese songs, which I don't usually listen to, but the whole point of Spotify is to discover new music right?!
